Franz Keim (December 28, 1840 – June 27, 1918) was an Austrian writer, poet, and dramatist.
Born in Stadl-Paura, Upper Austria, he pursued various early career paths, including service in the navy in Trieste and working as a private tutor and railway employee, before completing his university studies in 1874. He is best known for his work as a secondary school teacher (Gymnasialprofessor) in St. Pölten, a position he held from 1875 to 1898. Following his retirement from teaching, he lived as a freelance writer in Vienna and later in Brunn am Gebirge.
A commemorative plaque is affixed to house at Franz Keim-Gasse 12, 2345 Brunn am Gebirge, the street is named after him, where he last lived and died.
Keim’s literary output was extensive, particularly during the early decades of his career, and included numerous historical dramas, folk plays, and poems. Some of his notable works include the play Sulamith (1875), Die Spinnerin am Kreuz (1891), and a popular retelling of the Nibelungenlied for young readers (1908).
The relationship between Franz Keim and Emerich von Stadion developed during the time Stadion lived in St. Pölten. Their meeting occurred while Stadion was living in St. Pölten with the writer Emile Mario Vacano. Their bond is noted in biographical records as a significant personal relationship that is evidenced by an extensive collection of correspondence.
Both men were active participants in the Austrian literary scene of the late 19th century. While Stadion’s own literary reputation eventually faded, Keim maintained a more sustained presence in the cultural life of the period, receiving various honors throughout his career.
